Taste of Home's Light & Tasty, a new magazine from Wisconsin-based Reiman Publications which focuses on recipes lean on fat and calories but big on down-home taste, debuted this month. The magazine's common-sense approach to calorie-wise eating suggests lighter recipe options (without sacrificing taste) and smaller portions. It includes more than 75 recipes for main and side dishes, soups, salads, snacks and desserts. All recipes use readily available ingredients found in supermarkets and include nutritional information and diabetic exchanges where appropriate.

In an article titled ``Dazzling Desserts,'' you'll find recipes for a German Chocolate Torte and Orange Delight - and the color photograph looks delicious, as do photographs of other creations sprinkled throughout the pages. Numerous cooking, ingredient and savvy fat-substitution tips are included and among the regular features are a national recipe contest, a weekly menu planner for busy cooks, fast 30-minute entrees and lightened-up versions of readers' favorite recipes.

COOKBOOKS: Many cooks love to share and swap recipes, so it's not surprising that the Prize Tested Recipes contest which Better Homes and Gardens magazine launched in 1923 is still going strong. Now 200 of the best of those winning recipes have been collected in Better Homes and Gardens Treasured Recipes ($29.95) - with color photographs of more than 100 of them - many of which look attractive enough to make you want to whip them up instantly. Recipes span every decade from the 1920s and all have been updated for today's modern appliances and tastes. Many use convenience items like frozen bread dough, Bisquick, refrigerated pie dough, pudding mix, canned broths, jarred roasted red peppers and spaghetti sauce and canned corn and tomatoes.

Some of the creations featured include a French Chocolate Coffee Cake (1971); Turkey Tamale Casserole (1995); Hash Brown Omelet (1960); Basil-Tomato Tart (1994); Microwave Candy-Bar Fudge (1991); Peanut Butter Peanut Brittle (2000); and Choclava (1985).

Top winners were awarded $5 in the 1920s. Today winning recipes earn $400, with the annual grand prize worth $5,000. Looking through the book is like taking a trip down memory lane, food-wise. You may recognize many of the trends that were prominent - and that you indulged in - in the last century.

Dining out

For those who love sushi and love football, the annual Super Sushi Sunday, held in conjunction with the Super Bowl telecast Jan. 28 at Typhoon at the Santa Monica Airport, has become a once-a-year habit.

Usually sold out by game time, the $65-per-person foodfest includes Japanese-style appetizers and sushi from the upstairs Hump sushi bar (same ownership), soft drinks, fruit juices and sales tax. Alcoholic beverages and tips are not included.

Typhoon, a well-known Pan-Asian restaurant and bar, presents the Super Bowl game on two extra-large television screens. Doors open 30 minutes prior to kickoff. The restaurant is located at 3221 Donald Douglas Loop South, Santa Monica.
