NETLINK SIGNS WITH EPILOGUE TO BRING SNMP TO SNA PLATFORM

SAN FRANCISCO, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- At the International Symposium on Integrated Network Management being held here this week, Epilogue Technology Corp. announced that with the signing of Netlink Inc. as a new OEM customer, Epilogue's Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) technology will now be used in one of the market's first SNMP network management solutions for IBM SNA-based systems. Epilogue's SNMP has now been integrated into products that support the TCP/IP, NetWare, AppleTalk and now SNA protocol stacks.
Netlink has incorporated Epilogue's Envoy SNMP source code into its SDLC Link Server family of products, which is designed to connect SDLC (synchronous data link control) devices supported by IBM SNA hardware into LAN/WAN networking environments. Netlink's latest support software, SDLC Link Server Release 2, adds an SNMP MIB that operates concurrently with IBM's NetView network management software. This integrates the SDLC environment into the larger network management infrastructure, now making it possible to administer SDLC-linked devices from a single workstation running NetView, as well as other SNMP management stations. For the first time, SNA hardware can now be administered using any SNMP-based management software, including SunNet Manager, HP OpenView, IBM NetView/6000, Proteon OneView, Wellfleet Site Manager, among others. The new SDLC Link Server agent provides complete support for MIB II, support for all SNMP GET, SET and TRAP functions, and support for the SNA MIB. In fact, Netlink is a primary participant in an industry consortium working to create standard SNA MIB structures.
"There is a great misconception in the marketplace that SNMP management is just for TCP/IP-based networks," said David Preston, vice president and general manager of Epilogue. "The expansion into SNA clearly demonstrates that SNMP is a technology that is extensible to virtually any computing platform, and that integrated network management has come to mean that any type of network technology, whether it is a LAN, WAN or mainframe, can now be administered from a centralized network management station."
Netlink was one of the first to bring SNMP support to SNA because it licensed Epilogue's entire suite of SNMP source code and support software. Envoy is a Epilogue's compact, portable SNMP agent that allows OEMs and system integrators to incorporate SNMP support into their own products. Envoy is not specific to any operating system or computer platform, but is provided as compilable ANSI C source code that can be integrated into customers' software and firmware. It is fully compliant with the SNMP RFC standards, and customers will be upgraded to SNMP version 2.
Emissary is Epilogue's SNMP MIB compiler that allows SNMP implementors to extend standard SNMP variables to support extensions to the MIBs in each managed device. Attache is a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) implementation to complement the Envoy SNMP agent. Attache Plus is Epilogue's TCP/IP/UDP protocol suite, offering extended protocol and service support for Envoy. Embassy is Epilogue's highly portable, modular, multi-threaded operating system environment that is fully integrated with Attache and Attache Plus transport services and Envoy SNMP, providing a complete "silicon-up" SNMP environment.
Envoy licensing is available for $25,000 and Emissary licensing is $5,000. A bundled configuration which includes Envoy, Emissary and Attache is available for $45,500.
