NETHERLANDS' LARGEST WIND POWER DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCED
AS EARTH SUMMIT MEETS; U.S. TECHNOLOGY TO BE USED
OAKLAND, Calif., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Wind turbines supplied by a U.S. company will power a 25 megawatt electric power project in the Netherlands, the largest wind energy project in this country famous for its use of windmills. KENETECH/U.S. Windpower, Inc. (USW), and a Dutch utility, the NV Energiebedrijf for the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe (EGD), announced today that they have signed Power Purchase and Development agreements for a utility-grade Windplant to be installed in EGD's service territory.
"At a time when the world's attention is focused on the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, this project serves as a reminder that new sources of electric power can be compatible with environmental protection at a competitive price," said Cees Witvliet, president of EGD.
By adding a Windplant of significant size to its generation mix, EGD is following the Dutch government's 1990 Milieu Actie Plan (MAP: Environmental Action Plan) which calls for the reduction of environmentally detrimental emissions such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide. The Windplant is forecasted to avoid the production of 35,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
"We are very pleased to be working with EGD. The agreement shows that wind power is fast becoming a generally accepted utility technology and an attractive option for utilities internationally," said Gerald Alderson, president of KENETECH Corporation, USW's parent company.
Scheduled to be constructed and on-line by the end of 1994, this Windplant will be the largest wind energy project in the Netherlands to date and is estimated to produce 60 million kilowatt-hours annually, sufficient energy to serve approximately 20,000 average households.
Under the terms of the agreement, EGD will purchase the output from the Windplant, acquire the land, and supply the utility interconnection. USW will finance the project and provide operations and maintenance services.
EGD selected the advanced technology of USW's new variable speed turbine, which makes the cost of wind energy competitive with newly constructed conventional energy sources, such as coal and natural gas. Named the Model 33M-VS, this new generation wind turbine incorporates recent engineering developments in advanced electronics, aerodynamics and wind turbine design to capture significantly more energy at a lower cost than existing constant speed wind turbines.
U.S. Windpower is the world's largest wind energy company. Vertically integrated, the company designs, engineers, manufactures, constructs, operates and maintains Windplants. In the United States, USW operates a 42-megawatt Windplant in California, selling nearly 1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity to Pacific Gas & Electric Company annually.
KENETECH Corporation is a diversified energy company, providing products and services to the electric utility industry.
