NEIGHBORS, POLICE JOIN ON NIGHT OUT.

Police and residents in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and throughout the country went into their communities Tuesday night making special efforts to get to know each other as friends in the annual National Night Out.

``It's good to meet the people that are serving you in your community,'' said Bobbie Winger of the San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

 Valley's Knollwood neighborhood, who came to meet officers and detectives at a crime prevention seminar at LAPD's Granada Hills Community Service Center.

``This way, they get to know you and you're not just a number to them.''

Law enforcement officers and community residents gathered with flashlights in neighborhood marches, at block parties, barbecues and station open houses to show solidarity and discuss ideas about creating safer neighborhoods.

Officers offered crime prevention tips, while residents pointed out problems that they're having in their neighborhoods.

Some of the unity marches started out in one neighborhood and ended up at a local police station.

In Glendale, a throng of police officers joined parents and their children in a march down Victory Boulevard Victory Boulevard is a major thoroughfare on Staten Island, measuring approximately 8.0 miles (12.87 km) and stretching from the west shore community of Travis to the upper east shore communities of St. George and Tompkinsville.  and through surrounding neighborhoods.

Children held red, white and blue balloons to celebrate National Night Out, while fire trucks followed the procession with flashing lights.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and local law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. This may be a local or state police, federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). . It is designed to create a sense of community and to get everyone working to improve the local quality of life.

 dinner while LAPD's Foothill Division held numerous block parties.

In Granada Hills, several dozen residents gathered at their community station for classes aimed at preventing them from becoming the victims of identity theft or a home burglary.

Marge Callahan said she showed up after being bilked of $6,000 in a check fraud scheme two weeks ago.

``I was shocked. I wondered who could do that. How did they do it?'' Callahan said. ``One of the reasons I came here is that I wanted to hear the things I could have done to prevent this.''

Detective Tom Broad, head of the LAPD's Foothill Division burglary section, said National Night Out was another way for departments to help prevent some people from becoming victims of crimes.
