NEHA Makes Overtures to the White House.

On February 26, Anthony Aiken, president of NEHA, sent the following letter to George W. Bush, President of the United States:

Dear President Bush:

I would like to extend my congratulations to you on becoming the 43rd President of the United States of America.

This letter is to request an audience with you or your selected representative to discuss environmental and environmental health issues for our country.

Provided for your review is a copy of the March 2001 issue of the Journal of Environmental health. In the Journal, I have an article titled "The 'New' Republican Administration: How Will Our Profession Be Affected?" This article highlights the National Environmental Health Association's (NEHA's) position on the importance of environmental and environmental health issues for our country.

NEHA, of which I am president, is 64 years old. While our membership is impressively diverse, as our people work in employment settings that span from the public sector to the private sector and also include academia, the uniformed services, and even international settings, most of our members work for local health departments. We are the front line when it comes to responding to the public's concern about environmental threats to human health that range from the water we drink to the food we eat to the potential for terrorist attacks to the air we breathe and so on.

As the president of the National Environmental Health Association, I am committed to ensuring that we have definitive dialogue regarding the posture of your administration.

Please feel free to contact me or my administrative assistant, Jessica R. Recor, if you have any questions. Business hours: Monday through Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Business phone: (303) 377-0272. Fax: (303) 780-0418. E-mail: [less than]aikenenviron@earthlink.net[greater than].

I look forward to further discussions regarding the Republican Party's and your interest in addressing our nation's environmental and environmental health issues.

With warm regards,

Anthony C. Aiken
