NEELY PLAYER OF YEAR VOLLEYBALL STAR LED LANCASTER TO TITLE.

Byline: GIDEON RUBIN Special to the Daily News

LANCASTER -- Roxy Neely, a senior Lancaster High volleyball standout who led the Eagles to their first Golden League title in their 10-year history, was named the league's player of the year.

Neely, an accomplished martial artist who last year was ranked eighth in the nation in judo judo (j`dō), sport of Japanese origin that makes use of the principles of jujitsu, a weaponless system of self-defense. , started the season as an outside hitter/setter, and then took on full-time setting duties midway through the season when the Eagles went from a 6-2 set to a 5-1.

She had 157 kills, 90 aces, 29 blocks, 214 digs and 290 assists. She averaged 25 assists in the past eight games, when Lancaster switched formations.

``I think the biggest thing she meant to the team was that she could fill in any role and do it as well or better than anybody,'' Lancaster coach Dave Gutierrez said.

Lancaster also was represented on the all-league team by first-teamers Seferina Starks, Ashley Robinson Ashley Robinson (born August 12 1982) is a professional basketball player in the WNBA, currently playing for the Seattle Storm.
