In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98). NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd. Technologies, Inc. today announced its new CD Recordable disk drive. The Multi CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution. , based on phase change technology, is actually a multi-function optical disk drive featuring three drives in one. The highly versatile drive functions as a CD-Recorder for file distribution and archiving; an eraseable/rewritable 650 MB phase change cartridges for on-line storage/file backup; and a CD reader, offering 20X speed, for reading all standard CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc. CD-ROM in full compact disc read-only memory Type of computer storage medium that is read optically (e.g., by a laser). formats. As a CD-Recorder, end-users can take advantage of low-cost CD recordable media to easily copy and distribute files readable on the large installed base of CD readers. The drive provides a choice of recording methods: track-at-once, disc-at-once, and packet writing. As a file backup device, end-users can use readily available removable and rewritable phase change cartridges. Storage of images, data files, and system backups are easily accomplished using familiar drag and drop A graphical user interface (GUI) capability that lets you perform operations by moving the icon of an object with the mouse into another window or onto another icon. For example, files can be copied or moved by dragging them from one folder to another. techniques since the device operates just like a hard drive. The extremely durable cartridges offer random access, fast speed and vast storage capacity. The media is a non-contact, non-magnetic recording medium that results in exceptional reliability of data. Every write operation is followed by a read operation that verifies that the recorded information is intact. The drive offers a guaranteed minimum 30-year life and more than 1/2 million write-erase cycles. As a traditional CD reader, end-users can take advantage of blazing 20X speed to playback digital audio music CDs, Photo CDs, CD-ROM modes 1 and 2, CD-R and CD-RW (CD-ReWritable) The only rewritable CD technology. CD-RW disks look like other CD media, but with close inspection, they have a more polished surface with a very dark blue-gray cast. media, and video CDs. With an ATAPI (AT Attachment Packet Interface) The specification for ATA (IDE) tape drives and CD-ROMs. See IDE. ATAPI - AT Attachment Packet Interface interface, the Multi CD-R easily installs into a PC and is supported by DOS/Win 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT. With an average seek time of 79ms, the drive is designed for performance and is matched with affordable pricing. Evaluation samples will be available the latter part of the second quarter 1998 with production volume availability early in the third quarter of 1998. A fast SCSI interface version also will appear late in the third quarter of 1998. NEC Technologies, Inc.
