Newswire) - NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
LCD Technologies, Ltd. today announced that it will begin shipping samples of two new amorphous silicon, thin-film-transistor (TFT (Thin Film Transistor) The term typically refers to active matrix screens on laptop computers. Active matrix LCD provides a sharper screen display and broader viewing angle than does passive matrix. See LCD and thin film.

The new LCDs are extremely suitable for installation in various portable devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and portable GPS terminals as they can reproduce colors clearly and vividly even in indoor/outdoor environments with high ambient light.

The new products comprise of a 3.5-inch (8.9-centimeters-diagonal) quarter video graphics array “320x240” redirects here. For the Croatian festival, see 320x240 (festival).
The Quarter Video Graphics Array (also known as Quarter VGA or QVGA) is a popular term for a computer display with 320 × 240 resolution.
(QVGA (Quarter VGA) A screen resolution of 320x240 pixels, which is used on handheld devices. Although 320x240 seems half the 640x480 VGA resolution, the "quarter" comes from the total number of pixels, which is one fourth the number (320 times 240=76800; 640 times 480=307200). ) TFT LCD module, part number NL2432HC22-41B, and a 2.7-inch (6.8-centimeters-diagonal) quarter video graphics array (QVGA) TFT LCD module, part number NL2432HC17-04B.

By further optimization of optical design based on NEC LCD Technologies' own unique super-reflective natural light TFT (SR-NLT) technology, NL2432HC22-41B realizes both a high luminance of 200cd/m2 and a high reflective ratio of 15%. Furthermore, NL2432HC17-04B boasts the highest level of reflective ratio in the category of the transflective LCD modules of the same size and resolution at 35%.

Moreover, both LCD modules are equipped with a touch-panel, a timing controller and a DC-DC DC-DC Direct Current to Direct Current (power conversion)  converter. Consequently, these new LCDs offer a range of benefits to manufacturers of portable information devices in terms of development cost, lead time, as well as miniaturization min·i·a·tur·ize

The main characteristics of the new models are as follows:

1. Model No. NL2432HC22-41B: 3.5-Inch (8.9cm Diagonal) TFT LCD Module

By further optimization of optical design based on NEC LCD Technologies' own unique super-reflective natural light TFT (SR-NLT) technology, this LCD module boasts a luminance of 200cd/m2 - the highest luminance in the category of transflective LCD modules for mobile terminal use - while maintaining a high level of reflective ratio at 15%. Leveraging optimal balance of the luminance and reflective ratio is key to the superior quality of this LCD, ideal for multi-functional portable information devices.

2. Model No. NL2432HC17-04B: 2.7-Inch (6.8cm Diagonal) TFT LCD Module

By further optimization of the optical design based on NEC LCD Technologies' own unique super-reflective natural light TFT (SR-NLT) technology, this LCD module boasts a reflective ratio of 35% - the highest ratio in the category of transflective LCD modules for mobile terminal use - while maintaining a standard level of luminance of 100cd/m2 in the category of transflective LCD modules. This LCD places priority on reflection quality under direct sunlight, making it ideal for portable GPS terminals.

Recently, a broad range of portable devices are being launched on the market with the emergence of a networked information society. Some are equipped with transflective LCD modules as their display. These LCDs provide customers with a choice of two operating modes (depending on the ambient light environment), a transmissive mode employing a backlight back·light

system as the spectral source and a reflective mode employing ambient light as the spectral source. To date, there has been an issue with how to balance the brightness of the transmissive mode and the reflective ratio of the reflective mode as each pixel of the transflective LCD needs to be divided by the transmissive construction area and the reflective construction area.

"We have strived to conquer the dilemma of how to achieve an optimal balance between high brightness and a high reflective ratio for transflective LCDs," said Masaaki Hiroshima, new department manager in charge of product planning and marketing, NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. "Our new 3.5-inch and 2.7-inch QVGA TFT LCDs have solved this issue, answering the needs of portable information devices, and providing multiple benefits to manufacturers, including shortened lead time, reduced cost and weight."

NEC LCD Technologies will continue to develop products of high added-value and optimal quality to answer the needs of all of its industrial markets, including the LCD market for portable devices.

Both of the new models will be displayed at FPD (1) (Flat Panel Display) See LCD, plasma display, EL display, FED and flat panel display.

(2) (Field Programmable Device) An umbrella term for all chips that can be programmed by the customer including SPLDs, CPLDs and FPGAs. See PLD.
International 2006, which is being held at Pacifico Yokohama, Japan, from October 18 - 20.
