Newswire) - NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
LCD Technologies, Ltd. (NEC LCD Technologies) today announced that it will begin successive shipment of three new amorphous silicon thin-film-transistor (TFT (Thin Film Transistor) The term typically refers to active matrix screens on laptop computers. Active matrix LCD provides a sharper screen display and broader viewing angle than does passive matrix. See LCD and thin film.

All three new LCD modules feature NEC LCD Technologies' proprietary super-transmissive natural light TFT (ST-NLT) technology that achieves display of vivid colors in environments with high ambient light, enabled by 50% added brightness as compared with conventional models. In addition, the new LCDs boast a wide operating-temperature range of -10 degrees Celsius to +70 degrees Celsius (* NL6448BC26-09C support -20 degrees Celsius to +70 degrees Celsius).

These new and enhanced features make all three new models ideal for installation in automatic vending machines, point-of-sales systems for gas stations and measuring instruments for boats and ships such as fish finders, chart plotters, radars and GPS navigators.

Since the launch of its 5.5-inch TFT LCD module, part number NL3234BC35-22, featuring ST-NLT technology last April, market demand for NEC LCD Technologies' ST-NLT-based products in a variety of sizes and resolutions has risen dramatically as the technology enables display of vivid colors even under extremely bright outside light, which has long been an issue of conventional electronic display devices. Further expansion of the product lineup was undertaken following the successful launch of NEC LCD Technologies' 12.1-inch TFT LCD module, part number NL8060BC31-32, last August.

"NEC LCD Technologies' three new LCDs were developed specifically to respond to increasing market demand for ST-NLT-based products, further testimony of our leading competence in this field," said Hidetoshi Usui, department manager in charge of product planning and marketing, NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. "These new additions bring NEC LCD Technologies ST-NLT-based product lineup to five, with products ranging from 5.5 to 12.1 inches, enabling us to respond to a broad range of market needs."

NEC LCD Technologies will continue to enhance its lineup of LCDs adopting ST-NLT technology for a variety of industrial applications and a range of environmental conditions.

All three new models will be displayed at Display 2006, which is being held in Tokyo Big Sight Tokyo Big Sight (東京ビッグサイト  , Japan, from April 19 - 21.

About NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd.

NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. is one of the world's leading providers of high-quality, innovative, active-matrix liquid crystal display An active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) is a type of flat panel display, currently the overwhelming choice of notebook computer manufacturers, due to light weight, very good image quality, wide color gamut, and response time. The term was first used in 1975 by Dr T.  (AM-LCDs) modules for the industrial and high-end monitor markets. The company focuses its development on three core technology areas: ultra-wide viewing angle SFT technology, with high luminance and fast response; transflective NLT technology; and adaptive design technology that meet a variety of specialized needs for the flat panel display A thin display screen for computer and TV usage. The first flat panels appeared on laptop computers in the mid-1980s, and the LCD technology became the standard. Stand-alone LCD screens became available for desktop computers in the mid-1990s and exceeded sales of CRTs for the first time  markets. NEC LCD Technologies' worldwide support includes sales and marketing affiliates NEC Electronics America, Inc. (www.necelam.com) and NEC Electronics Europe (www.nec.de) that offer specialized display solutions to their respective markets.
