Outperforming their nearest competitors with 25 to 50 percent faster(1) output, the NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
SuperScript 4400 and its network-ready counterpart, the SuperScript 4400N, are two high-resolution, feature-rich desktop color laser printers with an estimated street price starting at $3,499. The new SuperScript 4400N is one of the industry's first Adobe(R) WebReady printers, enabling Internet- and intranet-savvy users to take immediate advantage of the Web to increase productivity and profitability.

Performance and High Resolution

Targeted at corporate users and graphic designers in medium to large workgroups, the SuperScript 4400/4400N are equipped with all of the characteristic features of premium color laser printers, including four pages per minute (PPM) performance for color printing “colour separation” redirects here. For other uses, see colour-separation overlay.

and 16 PPM for monochrome printing. This superior performance, combined with patented TrueRes(R) technology for 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution (with additional industry-standard DRAM; 600 x 600 dpi without), swiftly delivers photographic-quality output for business documents and professional graphics printing. Adobe(R) PostScript(R) 3(TM) printing technology further enhances the SuperScript 4400/4400N printers' output and is ideal for documents that mix various color and monochrome elements. The Printer Engine

For approximately $500 less than the nearest competitive printer, the SuperScript 4400/4400N feature a second generation print engine, which offers better imaging quality and reduced noise level, while allowing for a footprint that is more compact than other color lasers on the market.

The SuperScript 4400/4400N come standard with a 2.1 GB hard disk drive, a 100 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second.  and 32 Mbytes of memory, expandable to 128 Mbytes. The built-in hard drive enables greater storage for fonts and forms.

"Based on extensive focus group research, we are providing the end user with a feature-rich color laser printer right out of the box," said Stephen Fletcher, vice president and general manager of NEC Technologies Imaging Division. "Users indicated that ease of use, price, performance, web-based printing, 1200 dpi resolution and network connectivity were some of the key features they wanted in a color laser printer. With the introduction of the NEC SuperScript 4400 and SuperScript 4400N premium color laser printers, we are delivering on those requests. Expanding the NEC printer family of products to offer premium color laser printers is a logical extension to our award-winning monochrome laser printers and inkjet printers."

Fewer Consumables

With just eight long-lasting and easy-to-use consumables, the SuperScript 4400/4400N reduce user intervention, paper jams and the cost per page. Printing costs range from three cents per page for color (5 percent coverage) and two cents per page for monochrome (5 percent coverage).

Adobe WebReady and HDE redipS technology

The SuperScript 4400N is one of the industry's first printers with enhanced Internet Printing capabilities, thanks to NEC's new PrintAgent feature. PrintAgent incorporates Adobe WebReady printing technology and HDE's redipS technology to enable users to print to remote printers via the Web. By integrating these unique technologies, the SuperScript 4400N provides:

-- Real-time Status - enables users to view the status of a print

job (printer ready, paper out, paper jam, projects in the queue, consumable levels) for a remote SuperScript 4400N. This advanced status feature can be available as a window in the Client's standard application software and to remote managers through browser software.

-- Pull Printing - utilizing a standard web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you. , the Client can

send a document's URL URL
 in full Uniform Resource Locator

Address of a resource on the Internet. The resource can be any type of file stored on a server, such as a Web page, a text file, a graphics file, or an application program.
or file descriptor (programming, operating system) file descriptor - An integer that identifies an open file within a process. This number is obtained as a result of opening a file. Operations which read, write, or close a file would take the file descriptor as an input parameter.  to a remote SuperScript 4400N. The printer accesses the document via a secondary server and prints it while providing real-time status to the Client. Document formats supported by the SuperScript 4400N include PDF (Portable Document Format) The de facto standard for document publishing from Adobe. On the Web, there are countless brochures, data sheets, white papers and technical manuals in the PDF format. , Microsoft Word A full-featured word processing program for Windows and the Macintosh from Microsoft. Included in the Microsoft application suite, it is a sophisticated program with rudimentary desktop publishing capabilities that has become the most widely used word processing application on the market. , Power Point, Excel and any other application that provides plug-ins for the Client's standard browser.

Utilizing Adobe WebReady pull printing and HDE redipS technologies, the NEC Print Agent eliminates the need to have the document's application or the printer driver reside on the Client PC, saving cycles, increasing user productivity and enabling new generations of "Thin" Client PC to fully access the printer. This feature provides an exciting new standard for "Mobile Computing Using a computing device while in transit. Mobile computing implies wireless transmission, but wireless transmission does not necessarily imply mobile computing. Fixed wireless applications use satellites, radio systems and lasers to transmit between permanent objects such as buildings ." It also provides flexibility and fast return to applications that make it ideal in a company that has long or complex documents that are accessible on a network.

-- Remote Printing - enables users to print to a remote SuperScript

4400N as easily as printing to their local and directly-attached printers. For example, a company document that needs to be reviewed at several offices can be printed directly to a SuperScript 4400N at each one. Remote printing eliminates the extra steps and uncertainties occur when printing a file that arrives attached to an email message. Compared to a faxed document, the output is clear 600 x 1200 dpi, with monochrome or color output.

Architected for Growing Business Needs

To meet the needs of growing companies, the SuperScript 4400 can be upgraded at any time with an optional network interface card priced at $499. The SuperScript 4400N, which includes a built-in Ethernet network interface, is priced at $3,999.

To facilitate fast printing of large, graphic-intensive files, the SuperScript 4400N have a standard bi-directional IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  1284 interface and a built-in SCSI interface SCSI interface - SCSI adaptor . Available in the fourth quarter of 1998, the SCSI interface will provide Iomega ZIP Drive The Zip drive is a medium-capacity removable disk storage system, introduced by Iomega in late 1994. Originally it had a capacity of 100 MB, but later versions increased this to first 250 MB and then 750 MB.  compatibility and a port where a scanner can be attached to create a functional color copy station.

Designed for flexibility and compatibility in mixed network environments, the SuperScript 4400N also support PCL (Printer Command Language) The page description language for HP LaserJet printers. It has become a de facto standard used in many printers and typesetters. PCL Level 5, introduced with the LaserJet III in 1990, also supports Compugraphic's Intellifont scalable fonts.  5e with automatic emulation switching between Adobe PostScript 3 and PCL. The printers are equipped with three times as many fonts as the leading competitor -- 136 Adobe PostScript fonts A scalable font technology from Adobe that renders fonts for both the printer and the screen. PostScript fonts come in Type 1 and Type 3 formats. Type 1 fonts use a simple, efficient command language and are widely used, but Type 3 are not.  and 45 PCL 5e fonts -- providing compatibility and reliable printing of legacy PCL documents.

The printers also support several paper sizes and styles and offer an optional paper input tray, which accommodates an additional 250 sheets. NEC offers a variety of special color laser papers to support premium-quality output; sample packages of paper will be included with the new units.
