NEC Electronics Develops Audio Chip to Enable 50 Hours of Continuous Music Play on Handset.


Tokyo, Japan, Jan 13, 2006 - (JCN) - NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
 Electronics has developed the muPD99910, an audio processor that allows music to be continuously played for up to 50 hours on a cellular phone.

Available in small quantities starting on January 12, the chip is sample-priced at 1,500 yen ($13.15). NEC plans to launch volume production at 400,000 units per month in April.
