NEC AND TELLIUM TO DEVELOP SIMPLIFIED GLOBAL OPTICAL NETWORK SOLUTION.

NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
America Public Networks Group, a developer of advanced communication products, software and services for public networks, and Tellium (Nasdaq: TELM), provider of the world's first in-service, intelligent core optical switch, have announced a joint marketing and development agreement. The two companies plan to develop integrated optical systems, designed to simplify optical networks with fewer networking components.

Proven DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

optical technology from NEC, combined with core optical switching hardware and software from Tellium, will give carriers a high- capacity, reliable and cost-effective mesh network A communications network in which there are at least two pathways to each node. If one of the paths fails, the other is still available.

A "fully meshed" network means that every node has a direct connection to every other node, which is a very elaborate and expensive architecture.
solution with a smaller footprint that requires less power and maintenance. NEC's flexible, compact DWDM system, the SpectralWave 160, combined with Tellium's Aurora family of Optical Switches and StarNet Software Suite, provide the space, power and cost savings necessary to build or enhance a modern carrier-class, next-generation network.

"The work that Tellium and NEC are undertaking together demonstrates our commitment to offering a smarter, more cost-effective optical network for carriers," said Dr. Rikio Maruta, senior vice president at NEC America, Inc. "Integration of this type simplifies both the architecture and the management of the optical mesh network."

"We're pleased to align our efforts with a major DWDM player like NEC," said Harry Carr, Tellium's Chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "By combining our family of core optical switches and network planning and management tools with NEC's leading position in the networking industry, we're offering integrated and simplified optical switching solutions that help carriers lower their operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales ."

Under the joint development agreement, NEC and Tellium plan to develop a client interface card that integrates Tellium's Aurora Optical Switch with NEC's SpectralWave 160 DWDM transponder A receiver/transmitter on a communications satellite. It receives a microwave signal from earth (uplink), amplifies it and retransmits it back to earth at a different frequency (downlink). A satellite has several transponders. . The agreement also covers joint development of integrated network A network that supports both data and voice and/or different networking protocols. SpectralWave 160 is NEC's ultra-dense DWDM system. It supports up to 160 2.5G and 10G wavelengths on a single fiber. The system's advanced feature set includes 4:1 multiplexing multiplexing, in communication, technique whereby two or more independent messages, or information-bearing signals, are carried by a single common medium, or channel.  to carry four OC-48/STS-16 signals to be carried on a single 10G wavelength, resulting in a maximum channel capacity of 640 OC-48/STS-16 channels. SpectralWave 160 will be in the NEC booth at SuperComm 2001.

Tellium's Aurora Optical Switch offers carriers of telecommunications services In telecommunication, the term telecommunications service has the following meanings:

1. Any service provided by a telecommunication provider.

2.
the flexibility of supporting up to 512 OC-48/STM-16 ports or 128 OC-192/STM-64 ports to a total of 1.28 Terabits-per-second (Tb/s) bi-directional traffic. The switches operate in conjunction with Tellium's StarNet Software Suite, a versatile software package for creating, optimizing, running, controlling and provisioning optical networks.

Tellium delivers high-speed, high-capacity, intelligent core optical solutions that empower service providers around the world to create, run, control and optimize their networks. First in the world to provide in- service, intelligent optical switches, Tellium's Aurora Optical Switch family and the StarNet Software Suite together offer service providers a simple and cost-effective migration path to next-generation public networks.
