NEC, JST and JFCR Successfully Encapsulates Antitumor Agent into Carbon Nanotube.Tokyo, Japan, Nov 10, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd. announced on November 9 the results of its recent research on a carbon nanohorn, a type of carbon nanotube 2-5nm in diameter and 40-50nm in length. When several hundreds of nanohorns are aggregated, they form a sphere with a diameter of 100nm. In collaboration with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST JST Japan Science and Technology Agency JST Japan Standard Time (GMT+0900) JST Jubilee Sailing Trust (UK) JST Joseph Smith Translation JST JWFC (Joint Warfighting Center) ) and the Cancer Institute of the Japan Foundation for Cancer Research (JFCR), NEC has encapsulated cisplatin cisplatin /cis·plat·in/ (sis´plat-in) DDP; a platinum coordination complex capable of producing inter- and intrastrand DNA crosslinks; used as an antineoplastic. cis·plat·in n. , a kind of antitmor agent, into carbon nanohorns. Using electron microscopy, the three partners have observed that the encapsulated cisplatin maintains its molecular structure and forms a cluster of 2nm in the nanohorn. Further, cell experiments have confirmed that the agent is gradually released from the nanohorn and kills cancer cells. These findings indicate that carbon nanohorns have potential to become a drug carrier in future cancer treatment. Going forward, NEC, the JST and the JFCR will proceed with research with the aim of contributing to the development of a drug delivery system.
