NDC HEALTHCARE CLAIMS PASS ONE-MILLION-A-DAY MARK

ATLANTA, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- National Data Corporation (NASDAQ: NDTA) recently passed a significant hallmark -- processing over a million healthcare insurance claims in a single day.
The largest real-time processor of healthcare claims in the world, NDC entered the business in 1988, processing 700,000 claims that year. It now exceeds that on an average weekday. Volume for 1992 is expected to be more than 200 million.
NDC's service verifies insurance coverage while the patient is in the waiting room or at the prescription counter, tells the healthcare provider if the insurance company will pay -- and how much -- and directs payment to appropriate parties. Pharmacy claims can be passed against an NDC database to not only check for adverse drug reactions, but to also monitor for appropriate dosage and screen for age precautions and allergies.
Estimates of savings realized by insurance carriers and healthcare providers range from three to six dollars per claim.
Most electronic claims today are pharmacy claims and NDC is on-line to 80 percent of the nation's pharmacies to process those claims. The majority of other healthcare claims are still being processed manually, but with growing pressure from government and the insurance industry to reduce healthcare costs physicians, dentists and other healthcare providers are beginning to automate also. NDC recently entered into an alliance with CyCare Systems Inc. to handle physicians' claims. CyCare provides information systems to medical group practices and operates a claims clearinghouse for physicians.
National Data Corp. is a leading provider of value-added systems and clinical tools for the containment of healthcare costs and delivery of quality healthcare services.
