Manufacturers with Internet firewall A firewall that is used to shield users from the Internet. See firewall.  products meeting these standards are authorized to use the "NCSA Certified" logo for marketing and other promotional purposes.

NCSA Firewall Product Certification Product certification or product qualification is the process of certifying that a certain product has passed performance and/or quality assurance tests or qualification requirements stipulated in regulations such as a building code and nationally accredited test standards,  provides assurance to end-users that a certified Firewall product can be configured to protect an internal network against a suite of current threats tested by NCSA while allowing important business functions to operate effectively in an Intranet/Internet environment.

Certification means that NCSA, acting as an independent laboratory, has verified that a firewall product meets the current published certification criteria. Information on firewall certification testing procedures, as well as products which are currently certified, is posted on the NCSA Web pages (http://www.ncsa.com).

NCSA Version 2.0 Firewall Certification Criteria:

NCSA has announced revised certification testing criteria from its original Version 1.0 to the new Version 2.0. Firewall testing covering services provided to external users have been expanded to include service networks (e.g., FTP FTP
 in full file transfer protocol

Internet protocol that allows a computer to send files to or receive files from another computer. Like many Internet resources, FTP works by means of a client-server architecture; the user runs client software to connect to
and HTTP access to servers located on service networks). Also, testing of support for secure web protocol See secure Web server.  such as SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) The leading security protocol on the Internet. Developed by Netscape, SSL is widely used to do two things: to validate the identity of a Web site and to create an encrypted connection for sending credit card and other personal data.  has been incorporated in the new version.

The revised criteria also addresses security concerns in remote firewall management. Additionally, NCSA continues to incorporate new firewall attack methodologies into the firewall certification program. These and other new criteria ensure that NCSA Firewall Certification testing remains vigorous and pro-active, with an emphasis on mitigating security threats which continually emerge from known and unknown sources.
