NCR RECEIVES FIRST ORDER FOR TECHNICALLY-ADVANCED
 PARALLEL PROCESSING COMPUTER SYSTEM
DAYTON, Ohio, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ - A savings bank in Spain has placed the first order for NCR Corporation's technically-advanced, parallel processing computer system, the NCR 3600.
The $2.8 million order from Caja de Ahorros de Navarra also includes software and engineering services to migrate the bank's data and applications from a proprietary non-NCR mainframe system to the NCR 3600. The bank, which is headquartered in the northern Spanish city of Pamplona, selected the NCR computer over system proposals from International Business Machines Corporation and Digital Equipment Corporation.
Released last May, the NCR 3600 is a powerful mainframe-class system that represents NCR's vision of a new way of computing. With its parallel processing architecture, the NCR 3600 divides work among hundreds of low-cost microprocessors which work together in parallel to accomplish the task. In contrast, conventional mainframe computers operate serially on data elements, one at a time.
"NCR is very pleased to bring the cost and performance advantages of our new way of computing to the bank," said Frederick Newall, vice president of NCR's Europe Group. "The NCR 3600 is in a class by itself and provides capabilities for enterprise-wide computing that are simply not available in today's commercial mainframe environment."
The system will be installed in the bank's headquarters and control all transactions at the bank's 100 branches. The NCR 3600 will support a network of over 4,000 bank branch terminals to speed customer service and account information, process financial transactions and handle back office administration. Information about all bank financial transactions will be stored in a database available for on-line access for at least 18 months. This enterprise-wide relational database will provide realtime data capture and information analysis.
The NCR 3600 incorporates several key features including: the use of the latest Intel 80486sx microprocessor technology; a UNIX V.4 industry-standard operating system; high-speed, intelligent microprocessor interconnect technology; nearly continuous system availability of 99.98 percent; scalable relational database capabilities; and interoperability in multivendor environments through adherence to open system standards.
NCR(R), the Networked Computing Resource of AT&T, develops manufactures, markets, supports and services enterprise-wide information systems for worldwide markets.
