NCEW road show a success. The Granite State could use some broadcast editorializing. Two components contribute to a successful editorial done "on location" for television purposes: meaty substance and an attractive (preferably dry) background. On January's "NCEW NCEW National Conference of Editorial Writers New Hampshire Primary The New Hampshire primary is the first of a number of statewide political party primary elections held in the United States every four years, as part of the process of the Democratic and Republican parties choosing their candidate for the presidential elections on the subsequent Traveling Road Show and Revue," the former was amply provided by our tour guide and Denmother John Nichols People named John Nichols include:
Our agenda was substantial and substantive. Nichols did a tremendous job of lining up informative and authoritative sources, providing access to candidates and their staffs, and sharing a wealth of knowledge about New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E). and its historic primary. Aided by the gracious and generous hospitality of John Fensterwald and the staff of the Concord Monitor The Concord Monitor is the daily newspaper for Concord, the state capital of New Hampshire. It also covers substantial portions of surrounding Merrimack and Belknap counties in New Hampshire's Lakes Region. , it was a trip of which NCEW can be proud. I know my print colleagues filled hundreds of column inches with the wisdom gleaned from our visit. And this was fertile ground for broadcast editorials as well. The issues were relevant to my viewers awaiting their primary shot in April; we found plenty of locations that fairly screamed New Hampshire in front of which to tape my work; and a knowledgeable and cooperative photojournalist crew from a public access station in Manchester was available to assist me. I would have liked to tape a dozen more. All of which got me to thinking, what a shame viewers have no broadcast editorials in New Hampshire. It's hard to overstate the importance of the Concord Monitor and Manchester Union Leader editorials in the eyes of the candidates. Yet as in so many markets, the dominant broadcast media presence in New Hampshire is WMUR, an ABC ABC in full American Broadcasting Co. Major U.S. television network. It began when the expanding national radio network NBC split into the separate Red and Blue networks in 1928. affiliate and the only network affiliate in what is essentially the Boston market Boston Market (known before 1995 as Boston Chicken), headquartered in Golden, Colorado, is a chain of American fast-food restaurants. Founded in December 1985 in Newton, Massachusetts, the chain grew rapidly in the early and mid-1990s, filed bankruptcy in the late 1990s, and . Candidates stumble over each other to appear on WMUR's evening newscasts, and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for commercial time during which to air their 30- and 60-second spots. Yet WMUR leaves the important work of editorializing to the newspapers. What a missed opportunity to offer a vital service to viewers. With the Manchester Union Leader on one side and the Concord Monitor leaning to the other, WMUR is one television station that could really shake things up with a little editorializing . . . as it, and we all, should.
