NCD Software Corporation's PC-Xware Achieves X/Open Branding, Guaranteeing Conformity to Key Interoperability Standards; PC-Xware Is the Only PC X Server to Pass Stringent X/Open Testing.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 5, 1996--NCD Software Corporation, a world leader in X Windows See X Window.  technology, announced today that its X server software PC-Xware has been branded by X/Open, the worldwide vendor-neutral organization that establishes and promotes open systems standards.

PC-Xware stands as the only PC X server on the market to pass X/Open's stringent testing procedures. No other PC X server is in complete compliance with open system standards, and no other PC X server has received the X/Open component brand.

X/Open branding tells PC X server buyers and users that PC-Xware has been independently tested and shown to conform to Verb 1. conform to - satisfy a condition or restriction; "Does this paper meet the requirements for the degree?"
fit, meet

coordinate - be co-ordinated; "These activities coordinate well"
the key open systems standards of interoperability. Compliance to these standards means different systems can work together, and software developed on one platform can run on another. The branding will apply to all current and upcoming versions of PC-Xware for Windows, including PC-Xware and the newly released PC-Xware Classic, which offers the unbundled PC-Xware X server.

X/Open testing is carried out by an independent third-party testing organization licensed by X/Open. In addition to passing the X/Open test suites with the current product version, vendors must guarantee that all future versions will be developed and tested to match the standard specifications. NCD NCD - Network Computing Devices  Software has made the X/Open test suites an integral part of the quality assurance testing procedures for PC-Xware.

"X/Open branding assures NCD Software customers that PC-Xware brings them the safest and most reliable X server to fit their needs," said Mike Harrigan, vice president of marketing for NCD Software. "Achieving the brand virtually guarantees that PC-Xware is interoperable within an open client/server computing environment, and conforms to the same portability specifications of other products. By using an X/Open branded PC X server, users can work in their existing computing environment with the assurance that the X server will continue to meet their evolving requirements for application software."

The real value of X/Open branding is for all PC-Xware customers. An X/Open branded PC X server offers the buyer the greatest level of assurance that future versions of both the application and X server will work together. Compliance with open information standards assures that the X application will behave on a PC display exactly as it would on a UNIX based Refers to a Unix operating system. X/Open branding also removes the need for user organizations to perform complex, costly and time-consuming internal conformance testing Conformance testing or type testing is testing to determine whether a system meets some specified standard.

To aid in this, many test procedures and test setups have been developed, either by the standard's maintainers or external organizations, specifically for

"The X/Open brand is awarded only when a product conforms fully with the internationally recognized X/Open product standards. In addition to compliance with the standard, the product must pass our stringent X/Open Verification Test Suite as well as to commit to maintain compliance in the future," said Jeff Hansen, vice president of marketing of X/Open Company, Ltd. "We are pleased to announce that PC-Xware is the only X server to meet our specifications and receive the X/Open brand, which is synonymous with synonymous with
