point guard Erica Gomez will undergo X-rays this morning on her right ankle to determine if she can play in Monday's women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  West Regional final against Louisiana Tech.

Gomez injured her ankle early in the first half of the Bruins' 77-68 victory over Colorado State on Saturday night at the Sports Arena, when she stepped on the foot of Colorado State's Roxanne Manning.

Gomez was unsure after the game if she could play.

``I'm hanging in there. We'll see what happens,'' Gomez said. ``It's throbbing throb

Gomez was forced to wear an ankle boot and walk on crutches after the game.

``(I feel) terrible,'' Gomez said. ``It's hard to sit there and watch.''

Mixed signal: A UCLA fan hung this sign inside the Sports Arena: ``I'm here because the men's team stinks. Fire Steve Lavin Steve Lavin (born September 4,1964), a San Francisco, California native is a former college basketball coach and current ABC and ESPN TV analyst. As UCLA head basketball coach from 1996-2003, Lavin compiled a record of 145-78. !''

No preference: Louisiana Tech coach Leon Barmore Leon Barmore (born June 3, 1944, in Ruston, Louisiana, United States) is a college women's basketball coach. He coached at Louisiana Tech University from 1985 to 2002. Upon his retirement his .869 winning percentage was the best in women's basketball history.  might have the top-seeded team in the West Regional, but he wasn't about to say which team he wanted to face following the Lady Techsters' 73-52 victory over Louisiana State.

``That's always a tricky question. I would like to play the worst team, no matter who that is,'' Barmore said, declining to say whether he preferred UCLA or Colorado State. ``Regardless of who we play, it will be difficult. Colorado State has a large fan following and UCLA will be playing at home.''

Instant offense: The most impressive early performance was turned in by Louisiana Tech guard Betty Lennox, who 19 points in 18 minutes off the bench against LSU LSU Louisiana State University

.

She scored seven straight points in a one-minute, 14-second span in the first half that turned a 15-10 LSU lead into a 17-15 deficit.

``I think she came in and hurt us a lot,'' LSU guard Marie Ferdinand said. ``We didn't expect her to shoot the way she did. We had the game under control until she came in.''

No bragging rights: Although they beat the big in-state school, Louisiana Tech wasn't exactly cherishing its victory over LSU.

``We're trying to go all the way,'' Lennox said. ``It didn't really matter that we played them. It didn't make the game any bigger.''

Emergency lettering job: LSU forward Detrina White was wearing the wrong jersey number (35 instead of 23) after the Lady Tigers manager forgot to pack her jersey to Los Angeles.

So LSU improvised, taking White's new jersey to a lettering shop across from their downtown hotel. Her name was spelled correctly, but barely resembled the other players' jerseys.
