The Golden Globe Awards show and the countdown to George Clooney's departure from ``ER'' helped NBC NBC

The network had a 10.4 rating and 17 share for last week, well above second-place CBS' 8.8 rating and 14 share, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday. They were followed by ABC ABC

, with a 6.8 and 11, and Fox, with a 6.7 and 11.

``ER'' was easily the week's most-watched show, solidifying its lead over ``Friends'' in the competition for the season's top-ranked series. NBC is promoting Clooney's upcoming exit, set to occur during next month's ratings ``sweeps'' period.

Sunday's Golden Globes telecast had a 16.1 rating, its best ever and a pleasant surprise for NBC, which has been broadcasting the show for four years.

The awards show's previous record was 15.9, achieved last year and in 1981 on CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast. . Last year's telecast was buoyed by interest in ``Titanic,'' and NBC executives had anticipated the ratings would slip this year. Instead, the awards show is becoming a major stop on the way to the Oscars.

The end of ``Monday Night Football'' on ABC is setting up a strong battle for viewers. CBS' comedies ``Everybody Loves Raymond'' and ``Becker'' both scored top 10 Nielsen finishes last week, and so did their Fox competition, ``Ally McBeal.'' ABC's rating last week was well below its season average.

The developing networks were helped by showing entertainment programs during President Clinton's State of the Union address “State of the Union” redirects here. For other uses, see State of the Union (disambiguation).

NBC's ``Nightly News'' and ABC's ``World News Tonight'' tied in the evening news competition with 8.6 ratings and 16 shares.
