Quite by accident, NBC, which has been running into happy accidents regularly, has a show in its pocket called ``Dark Skies,'' which is about the defense of America against an evil alien invasion. It so perfectly plays off the themes from ``Independence Day'' it will probably look as if NBC planned it all.

But it didn't. NBC was merely looking for Looking for

``We may have stepped into something great here,'' said Preston Beckman, NBC's senior vice president for program scheduling.

``Dark Skies'' is no sequel to ``Independence Day.'' It concerns a couple who stumble upon the fact that aliens have been present in America for several decades and are responsible for many historic events, including the assassination Assassination

Still, the alien theme is close enough for the network's promotion team, widely acknowledged to be the best in television, to run with it. NBC started the promotion campaign for ``Dark Skies'' during the NBA playoffs last month, a remarkably early heads-up for a fall television show.

At the time, NBC wanted only to create awareness, through eerie promotional spots, that ``Dark Skies'' had some kicky kick·y

science-fiction elements. The network wanted to get the message across that this was a show for fans of ``The X-Files.''

But now the campaign is likely to take on a new twist, Beckman said, with viewers told something like: ``America was forced to strike back against an alien invasion this summer. Guess what: It didn't work!''

Beckman said NBC would not, of course, make any overt mention of ``Independence Day,'' because the movie is the property of 20th Century Fox. This provides a little extra relish for NBC, being in place to cash in a bit on a success by Fox, a network rival that NBC has feuded with in the past and that also produces ``The X-Files.''

The source of that feud: NBC charged that Fox was illegally owned - by aliens. (A different kind: businessmen from Australia.)
