NBC, APPLE PEAS IN IPOD NEW, CLASSIC TV DOWNLOADABLE.

BURBANK - NBC Universal NBC Universal is a media and entertainment company formed in May 2004 by the combination of General Electric's NBC with Vivendi Universal Entertainment (part of the French Media Group, Vivendi SA). GE owns 80% of NBC Universal with the remaining 20% owned by Vivendi SA.  is embarking on a technological future even as it embraces its television past.

The company announced Tuesday that it is teaming with Apple Computer Inc. to make available for downloading hundreds of episodes of 11 television shows, both classic and current, from the iTunes Music Stores for viewing on Apple's new video iPod A common name for the first iPod that supported video, introduced in late 2005. Also called the 5th Generation iPod (5G iPod). Apple refers to Video iPods as simply "iPod." See iPod.  or on a computer.

The deal is Apple's second content agreement with a major conglomerate in recent months. In October, Apple partnered with The Walt Disney Co. to make available the ABC ABC

``We are committed to helping viewers enjoy the wide breadth of our programs across an equally wide range of devices and distribution models,'' Wright said in a printed statement.

In addition to the NBC shows past and present, shows from NBC Universal's cable USA Network (``Monk'') and Sci-Fi Channel (``Battlestar Galactica'') are also among the selections.

``We're thrilled to expand the iTunes video catalog with 11 popular TV shows from NBC, USA Network and the Sci-Fi Channel,'' said Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive. ``In our first two months we've sold more than 3 million videos and have expanded our TV catalog from five shows to 16 shows.''

Current television shows can be downloaded the day after they air on television. Television shows are $1.99 per episode, and music videos and short films are $1.99 each.

In addition to the television shows, the iTunes Music Store now features a selection of over 3,000 music videos, Pixar short films, and more than 2 million songs.
