NAZARIAN, VETERAN DN COPY EDITOR, DIES.

VAN NUYS - A memorial service is scheduled Friday for Charlie Nazarian, longtime Daily News copy editor and a pillar in the Armenian-American community.

Nazarian died Sunday surrounded by his family in their Van Nuys home after a lengthy bout with cancer. He was 87.

Nazarian, whose 65-year career began with a fedora hat and ``press'' badge at the Knickerbocker News in Troy, N.Y., later worked at the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Herald Examiner before retiring in the mid-1980s after 14 years at the Valley News and Green Sheet, which became the Daily News.

He also founded and edited Armenian International Magazine, a Glendale-based publication read worldwide.

He was a leader in St. Peter Apostolic Armenian Church Armenian Church, autonomous Christian church, sometimes also called the Gregorian Church. Its head, a primate of honor only, is the catholicos of Yejmiadzin, Armenia; Karekin II became catholicos in 1999.  since its founding in 1962. He knew former California Governor George Deukmejian Courken George Deukmejian, Jr. (born July 6, 1928) is an American Republican politician from California, the thirty-fifth Governor of California (1983-1991), and a former California Attorney General (1979-1983).  and Superior Court Judge Armand Arabian on a first-name basis.

And through a social service agency he founded to aid Armenians, he is credited with helping more than 100 immigrants win their U.S. citizenship, for which he never missed a ceremony.

``He was a champion,'' said his daughter, Lucy Haroutunian of Van Nuys. ``His body failed him, but his mind was sharp as a tack - once a journalist, always a journalist.''

``He was always a gentleman, always had a smile, always had a kind word and always asked you how you were doing,'' said Greg Wilcox, business reporter.

Nazarian is survived by his wife, Ephronia of Van Nuys; a son, Richard Nazarian of Agoura; three daughters, Lucille Haroutunian of Van Nuys, Alice Kahveciyan of Northridge and Anna Schramm of Sagle, Idaho; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Peter Apostolic Armenian Church in Van Nuys. A burial ceremony will take place at noon Saturday with interment to follow at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church.
