NAVY VETERAN KILLS HIMSELF DEPUTIES FIND BODY OF 56-YEAR-OLD MAN.

When the smoke from the tear gas cleared, the Sheriff's Department's special weapons deputies found the 56-year-old Navy veteran dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

``We tried repeatedly to make contact but were unsuccessful,'' said Deputy Dave Jennings of the Palmdale sheriff's station. ``What we were told was that he might try to harm himself.''

Before deputies entered the home, they evacuated people from nearby homes. The man's parent's and sister waited for the discovery at a command post set up in a nearby field.

Neighbors said they were shocked at the presence of so many deputies and at the sound of the tear gas guns and flash grenade.
