NAVY'S FIRST GLOBAL HAWK TAKES MAIDEN FLIGHT.

PALMDALE - The first Global Hawk robot surveillance plane slated for a Navy test made its first flight Thursday, Northrop Grumman Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) is an aerospace and defense conglomerate that is the result of the 1994 purchase of Grumman by Northrop. The company is the third largest defense contractor for the U.S.  announced.

The pilotless, computer-controlled plane, dubbed N-1, flew from the company's Palmdale production facility to Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. , Calif.

A joint Navy, Air Force and contractor team will begin preliminary testing of the aircraft in preparation for its delivery to the Navy in 2005.

N-1 is the first of two Global Hawks Northrop Grumman is producing for the Navy's Global Hawk Maritime Demonstration program. The second is scheduled to make its maiden flight Noun 1. maiden flight - the first flight of its kind; "the Stealth bomber made its maiden flight in 1989"
