NAVAIR LAUNCHES NEW PHASE OF OPEN SYSTEMS NETWORK; MACINTOSH CENTRAL TO UPGRADE

RESTON, Va., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- This morning in a ceremony at Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Headquarters in Arlington, Va., Vice Adm. William C. Bowes initiated installation of fiber optic cable that will connect the seven buildings at NAVAIR Headquarters. Apple's Macintosh computer is a standard part of the network; the upgrade will increase NAVAIR's internal communication capacity by about tenfold.
"NAVAIR had rigorous open systems requirements and we met them," stated Henry Clifton, director, Apple USA's Federal Systems Group. "Macintosh technology is one of two approved standards for the desktops at NAVAIR -- fully integrated into NAVAIR's emerging state- of-the-art network."
To make the rehabilitation project a reality, Apple USA's Federal Systems Group, based in Reston, engaged in an unprecedented team effort with NAVAIR as well as other leading companies in open systems technology. Apple Federal provided critical design support for the Appletalk network upgrade and will staff the "Help Desk," an on-site customer support service.
NAVAIR is a multibillion dollar operation with 45,000 employees in more than 20 facilities worldwide. The project to rehabilitate the infrastructure at Headquarters will result in the largest intra- building air blown fiber installation in North America.
Headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL), is a leading manufacturer of advanced personal computer systems, system software and peripherals for education, business, government and the home.
