NATURE PRESERVE PLANNED IN TEJON RANCH 100,000 ACRES TO BE PROTECTED IN PROPOSAL.

Byline: Susan Abram Staff Writer

TEJON - Plans for a 100,000-acre nature preserve in Tejon Ranch Tejon Ranch Company is the largest private landowner in California. It was incorporated in 1936 to organise the ownership of a large tract of land originally comprised of four Mexican land grants, and began ranching in the 1840's.  will be unveiled today, along with details of a two-year long scientific study that examined wildlife and topography within the region that spills into Kern Kern, river, 155 mi (249 km) long, rising in the S Sierra Nevada Mts., E Calif., and flowing south, then southwest to a reservoir in the extreme southern part of the San Joaquin valley. The river has Isabella Dam as its chief facility.  County.

Tejon Ranch and Trust for Public Land officials said Monday an independent team of scientists conducted the two-year long study to determine where within the 426 square miles A square mil is a unit of area, equal to the area of a square with sides of length one mil. A mil is one thousandth of an international inch. This unit of area is usually used in specifying the area of the cross section of a wire or cable.  of land would be the ideal place for a preserve.

The preserve would ``accomplish three goals,'' said Barry Zoeller, spokesman for Tejon Ranch Co.: serve as a model for conservation, protect sensitive habitat and allow some public access.

``Tejon Ranch is a remarkable piece of California,'' Zoeller said. ``It has many different climates and topography.''

Tejon Ranch, California's largest single land holding, once was home to a large cattle operation, but the company has sold off its livestock in recent years in preparation for development.

But those plans are independent of the preserve, Zoeller said, though the preserve comes at a good time, as more communities must deal with growth, he said.

Tejon Ranch and Trust for Public Land officials are hoping the preserve will be managed by both public and private entities, Zoeller said.
