NATURE CENTER TO HOST HOLIDAY CRAFT-MAKING; PLACERITA CANYON GUEST WILL HAVE CHOICE OF HOLIDAY-THEMED MATERIALS.

Byline: Sharon Cotal Staff Writer

Most holiday craft sales have wreaths and centerpieces for sale, but at next month's Placerita Canyon Nature Center Holiday Craft Faire, guests are invited to make their own crafts.

The nature center will provide all of the live greens, including berries and mistletoe mistletoe, common name for the Loranthaceae, a family of chiefly tropical hemiparasitic herbs and shrubs with leathery evergreen leaves and waxy white berries. They have green leaves, but they manufacture only part of the nutrients they require. , pine cones pine cone

and other natural wild treasures for those who would like to make wreaths or centerpieces. The customer need only purchase the wreath form or the wood for the centerpiece.

Crafts for kids to make also will be available. All of the children's crafts will be supervised by nature center docents, Junior Rangers Rapidly deployable airborne light infantry organized and trained to conduct highly complex joint direct action operations in coordination with or in support of other special operations units of all Services.  and 4-H Club members and there will be something for kids of all ages - even preschoolers - including pine cone angels, hair accessories, candle dipping, pine cone bird feeders bird feeder also bird·feed·er

Besides being an excellent opportunity for children to learn about nature, the fair also is an inexpensive way to make holiday decorations out of live greenery that most people wouldn't be able to find in their own backyard.

Donna Fagan, a member of the Nature Center Associates board, said that the greens are gathered from a variety of locations throughout the area.

``We get some of them from Devil's Punchbowl Punchbowl, hill, 500 ft (152 m) high, in the city of Honolulu, SE Oahu island, Hawaii. In the bowllike extinct volcanic crater at the summit (reached by a scenic drive) is the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, for those killed in World War II.  up in Pearblossom. They have more of a variety because of the higher elevation. We also get some from Eaton Canyon and San Dimas,'' Fagan said.

Fagan said that anyone can make the crafts that are offered at the fair, even those with no crafting experience.

``It's not that hard, it just depends on how imaginative you are. Last year some of the wreaths that people made were so beautiful that other people were offering to buy them on the way out.''

Everything at the fair is priced under $10, with wreath forms costing $8 and children's crafts costing $1. There will also be face painting, button making and reasonably priced refreshments re·fresh·ment

available. The proceeds will go to the Nature Center Associates, which uses the money to train docents, keep the facilities going, maintain the gift shop and provide guided hikes and animal shows.

``If we didn't do fund-raisers, there wouldn't be any hikes for the children. The training for the docents costs thousands of dollars annually, so we have these craft sales and bake sales “Bake Sale” redirects here.
