BOOK REVIEW

You know an activity has reached the masses when there are schools to teach it and people willing to pay for it. That's certainly the case with paddle sports.

But until you decide to shell out money to become a better paddler, check out Canoe & Kayak's Beginners Guide 2001, which is available at larger newsstands and bookstores and some sporting-goods stores.

This special issue offers some excellent advice for the soon-to-be novice paddler. Besides an article on how to choose a paddling school, the magazine has articles from how to safely get your kids involved in paddling to choosing the correct canoe or kayak paddles to getting to know canoes and kayaks.

The only drawback to the issue is that it doesn't give a beginner an idea of the cost of getting into the canoe or kayak. Although it did allude to allude to

paying $400 for a top-of-the-line paddle, which makes one wonder what a canoe or kayak will set you back.

But this issue is a great buy for anyone thinking of joining the world of paddle sports.

The San Pedro-based club's Web site (www.cbyc.org) tells us it has sailed small boats in L.A.'s surrounding waters since 1932. Now the club has 56 racing days a year.

Worth a look are the race results to see the cool names for some of the boats. Favorites include Sluggo, Shoots, Quick Response and Rambunctious.
