NATURAL RESOURCES STEP-BY-STEP - BOOK REVIEW.``Backpacker's Day Hiker's Handbook'' By Michael Lanza (The Mountaineers Books, 2003, $16.95) Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. is a day hiker's mecca. Here's a book beginners can use 15 minutes after purchase. A fine, comprehensive primer, this guide does a particularly good job explaining the finer points of hiking boots and day packs. I was heartened to see an emergency space blanket on the list of musts for the hiker's day pack - one saved my life and those of three companions on a day hike gone awry 20 years ago. The guide covers the basics well - and includes a few unexpected chapters - one on the minimum impact philosophy, another on how to react properly when encountering wildlife, a third, a surprisingly detailed explanation of how to ``go'' along the trail. Now that's a primer. - Michael A. Anastasi CAMP CHAOS - On the Internet Camping with the kids can be a stressful experience.
