TIME TO GET HOOKED ON THOSE OLD LURES

This lure won't catch fish. Not anymore.

The 1927 Heddon Flipper, valued at $150, is retired.

It's a classic, a symbol of a time gone by, when fishing tackle was fashioned from wood and when people fished from boats propelled by oars. It was a simpler time, when the fish were bigger, at least in our memories, and the pace was slower.

Brian Carlson, president of the Minnesota Fishing Federation, tried to explain the allure of old lures.

``A lot of it has to do with the fact we had 'em when we were kids,'' said Carlson, 50. ``There's always, for me at least, a warm, fuzzy feeling that comes over you.

``It reminds you of grandpa or grandma, or Uncle Bill. Or it reminds you of the time you lost the motor. It's a cabin or a dock or a boat.''

In the past 20 years, old tackle has come out of attics and garages, given away by widows of avid anglers or inherited by the next generation. It has become valuable to collectors.

The value of old tackle is based on several factors.

``Anything with glass eyes, anything wooden are classics,'' Carlson said. ``The collectibility depends on who made it, how rare it is, the condition it's in and whether it has the box with it.''
