NATURAL RESOURCES HIKING BY THE MILE.

Before hiking the sometimes-rugged countryside of the San Gabriel Mountains San Gabriel Mountains, S Calif., E and NE of Los Angeles, running c.50 mi (80 km) westward from Cajon Pass. San Antonio Peak (10,080 ft/3,072 m) is the highest of the range. Citrus fruits are raised on the southern foothills.  and Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los , log onto its informative Web site (http://tchester.org/sgm/hikes.html). There are hundreds of trips listed on this site, 72 alone in and around Mount Wilson.

Each region includes maps which break down the hiking trails by numbers. The highlight is a detailed explanation of the Pacific Crest Trail The Pacific Crest Trail (also known as the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail) is a long-distance mountain hiking and equestrian trail that runs from the United States border with Mexico to its border with Canada and follows the highest portion of the Sierra Nevada and , which includes the San Gabriels from Cajon Pass At an elevation of 1,277 meters (4,190 ft.) the Cajon Pass (IPA: [kə'hoʊn 'pæs]) is a moderate-elevation mountain pass between the San Bernardino Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California in the United States.  to Liebre Mountain, a 171-plus mile stretch.

One hike within the area, a six-mile walk from Horse Trail to Liebre Mountain, is reviewed. There is also a nine-day itinerary of trekking through the entire Pacific Crest Trail.

--Beach watching: The beaches of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  are hardly a secret. Many of them are world famous for various reasons. So maybe Web sites describing where to go aren't always so important. But here's one anyway from the Department of Beaches and Harbors (http://beaches.co.la.ca.us).

Maybe the most informative aspect of this site is a link to upcoming events.

BOOK REVIEW

``The California Coast'' - Text by Karen Misuraca with photography by Gary Crabbe (Voyager Press), $29.95

This book won the author both the 2002 Outdoor Book and Writer of the Year awards from the Outdoor Writers Association of California. The judges had an easy time - this is a spectacular book.

Granted, Misuraca and photographer Crabbe had a lot to work with. The coast of California is as diverse as it is beautiful. Misuraca produces a series of travel guidebooks, so the left coast is familiar territory for her. But this is not a guidebook; it's what she calls a ``series of essays that includes the most famous sights, but also stories about the people who do interesting things along the coast.''

Some of those interesting people include Mike Shaw

The body of a jellyfish is shaped like a bell or umbrella, with a clear, jellylike material filling most of the .

Other portraits of coastal dwellers add a human face to the story of the places she describes.

From the misty redwoods of the north coast to San Diego sunshine, Misuraca supplies some natural and cultural history of the places she describes, along with enough detail to serve as ``wish book'' inspiration for those planning a trip. A visit to AAA AAA: see American Automobile Association.

for some maps and a motel guide, and you're ready for a coastal safari.

Gary Crabbe's photography captures the look and feel of California's coast. He thanks the deans of outdoor photography, Galen and Barbara Rowell, who died in a plane crash near Bishop this week, for their support. They would be proud of their disciple.

You might want to get more than one copy of this book to have as coffee- table gifts for visiting East Coast friends so they can remember what they're missing when they leave.
