NATURAL RESOURCES FLY GUYS - BOOK REVIEW.Pop Fleyes - Bob Popovics's Approach to Saltwater Fly Design By Ed Jaworowski and Bob Popovics (Stackpole Books, $34.95) Inventive fly tiers can become well known in the fly-fishing community for a single pattern they invent. A few great ones, such as Bob Clouser and Lefty Kreh, who wrote the introduction to this book, are famous for whole styles of fly design. Bob Popovics joined that elite group when he created his ``Surf Candy'' line of epoxy-headed saltwater flies. In ``Pop Fleyes,'' he tells how to sculpt sculpt v. sculpt·ed, sculpt·ing, sculpts v.tr. 1. To sculpture (an object). 2. But there is much more in this book, brilliantly photographed and written by Popovics' longtime fishing buddy Ed Jaworowski. Popovics shows you how to shape flies with silicone and how to create lifelike shrimp and squid patterns. I can attest that his Spread fly design has fooled plenty of fish in Baja. Also included are tips on knots and casting weighted flies. If you fly-fish saltwater, don't miss this book. - Bill Becher THE LURE OF THE RINGS - On the Internet Don't throw away that dusty spinnerbait in Grandpa's old tackle box. The site lists lures that could fetch up to $1,500 or more if they're in reasonably good shape and in their boxes: the Michigan Life-Life, K and K Minnow minnow, common name for the Cyprinidae, a large family of freshwater fish which includes the carp (Cyprinus carpio), and of which there are some 300 American species. It is one of the fastest non-motorized sports on earth (The fastest non-motorized sport is speed skydiving, in which divers reach speeds of over 480 km/h.). The current world record is 252. isn't for the faint of heart. Not when the world-record speed mark is at a NASCAR-like 154 mph. So says the Speed Skiing Web site (www.speedski.com). Surprisingly, speed skiing is not big in ski-crazy Europe. But there are a handful of places in the United States (the closest being in Oregon) to try what is touted as ``The Fastest Non-Motorized Sport On Earth.'' - Chris Cocoles CAPTION(S): box Box: TUNE IN |
