Anyone who wants to hike either the Appalachian, Pacific Crest or Continental Divide trails - collectively known as the Triple Crown - had better know what they're doing, and have lots of time on their hands in which to do it. The Appalachian Trail starts in New England, meanders through the Mid- Atlantic states, down through Georgia, North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (E), South Carolina and Georgia (S), Tennessee (W), and Virginia (N). Facts and Figures Area, 52,586 sq mi (136,198 sq km). Pop. and peters out in Tennessee - about 2,200 miles in all. The Pacific Crest Trail The Pacific Crest Trail (also known as the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail) is a long-distance mountain hiking and equestrian trail that runs from the United States border with Mexico to its border with Canada and follows the highest portion of the Sierra Nevada and involves extremes, from the heat of Southern California to the cool, higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada and the Southern Cascades and on to wetter Oregon and chill of Washington. About 2,500 miles in length. Finally, if you haven't already worn your boots into flaps of leather, there's the Continental Divide Trail, which hasn't even been fully mapped. It takes one through the contrasting landscapes of New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, and is about 3,100 miles. The book is full of detail on specific tools, maps, shelter sites and routes to take. Where it shines, though, is in explaining the secret community of hikers. Hikers are often romanticized as rugged people out for adventure, but the truth is you will meet many other hikers on your trek. This community can be as important and vital to survival as a sleeping bag capable of keeping you warm in 20-below weather. Whether or not you're prepared to drop everything and hike these trails, the book lets you hike them vicariously. Don't be surprised if you feel a little winded.
