The willingness of climbers to test the limits of human effort and the impact of technology on climbing is well described. Many fine black-and- white photographs help illustrate a sport that fascinates many, if only from their armchairs.

Selters captures the human side of mountaineering with his tales of the unique individuals who scale mountains, for whatever the reason. He also provides a description of historic climbing routes for those who might want to venture in the path of the pioneering climbers.

The book can be a bit technical at times, and a glossary of terms would have been useful for those who don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
