NATURAL RESOURCES BOOK REVIEW.

``An American Traveler: True Tales of Adventure, Travel, and Sport''

By Randy Wayne White Randy Wayne White (b. 1950) is an American writer of crime fiction and non-fiction adventure tales. He has written best-selling novels and has received awards for his fiction and a television documentary.  (The Lyons Press), $22.95

Former Florida fishing guide Randy Wayne White said he had the world's greatest job writing the ``Out There'' column for Outside Magazine before he turned to fiction writing. (This was before Outside became a gear and destination catalog.)

``An American Traveler'' is a collection of White's columns from the late 1990s. White is a natural storyteller and is at his best when he has a good tale to tell. But like a pitcher running out of gas in the seventh inning, White has already shown us his best stuff in previous collections. Readers of his ``Batfishing in the Rainforest'' and ``The Sharks of Lake Nicaragua'' might be a bit disappointed in this new book.

But there is still plenty to like here. White writes with style and humor about adventures most of us never will experience, such as diving with great white sharks in South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa. , tarpon tarpon (tär`pŏn), common name for members of the family Elopidae, large herringlike game fish of the warm seas of the Western Hemisphere, ranging occasionally from Long Island to Brazil and to the west coast of Africa and entering freshwater  fishing in the dark with night-vision goggles goggles,

He writes about poison ivy poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac, woody vines and trailing or erect shrubs of the family Anacardiaceae (sumac family), native to North America.  (he's against it) and middle age (he's suffering from it).

White is a journalist, too, and he exposes Steve Irwin
For the rugby league footballer of the same name, see Steve Irwin (rugby league).

For example, using small integers to represent error codes without the program interpreting them to the user (as in, for example, Unix "make(1)", which . Enjoy!

ON THE INTERNET

The problem with some trail Web sites is that they have insufficient information or they are specifically geared to one activity. Caltrails.org connects viewers with trails nearby and abroad and it includes many activities.

As an example, Caltrails.org shows a trail that offers walking, horseback riding horseback riding: see equestrianism. , in-line skating, fishing, swimming, archery, bird watching, picnics and is wheelchair accessible. Most Web sites offer just hiking or biking.

Once a viewer finds a trail of interest, they can learn its length, surface, description, difficulty, parking access and even transit information. Viewers also can learn of restaurants or restrooms nearby in addition to rental information.

One particularly interesting feature is a section called ``Making Trails Happen.'' Here, viewers discover how trails are built, maintained, funded and get an overview of community and environmental issues, economic benefits, land acquisitions and legal/liability, among others.

The site's trail search is its strong point, although extras such as links, calendar, site maps and news are adequate.

The only weakness is the site's narrow scroll window, which can be annoying while going through the many trails offered.
