NATURAL RESOURCES BOOK REVIEW.

Winter Hiking & Camping

By Michael Lanza (The Mountaineers Books), $16.95

The case for winter hiking and camping includes the beauty of snow-covered mountains, fewer crowds and my favorite My Favorite is an independent synthpop band from Long Island, New York. The book is divided into two main sections, the first for those who only want to venture out for day hikes (or snowshoeing snow·shoe

Gear and clothing selection, choosing a destination, what to eat and drink, winter ailments and their treatment, winter weather prediction and other useful information is clearly presented.

If you hike or camp in winter you will find this book helpful, but incomplete. It touches lightly on transportation methods like snowshoeing and backcountry skiing Backcountry skiing is skiing in a sparsely inhabited rural region over ungroomed and unmarked slopes or pistes. More importantly, the land and the snow pack are not monitored, patrolled, or maintained. Fixed mechanical means of ascent such as ski lifts are typically not present. , understandable because these topics are worth a book.

Less understandable is that avalanche dangers are covered in a single page. A chapter would have been more appropriate. The author says to stick to heavily wooded areas and avoid steep, open slopes after a heavy snowfall or wind and you will be safe. Not true.
