You might think a guide to cross-country skiing cross-country skiing

Skiing in open country over rolling, hilly terrain. It originated in Scandinavia as a means of travel as well as recreation. The skies used are longer, narrower, and lighter than those used in Alpine skiing, and bindings allow more heel movement.
in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  could be scribbled on the back of a Snow Summit lift ticket. But this excellent 211-page book is crammed with 68 different ski tours in the Tehachapi, San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains San Bernardino Mountains, part of the Coast Range, S Calif., extending c.60 mi (100 km) NW and SE through San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Notable peaks are San Bernardino Mt. (10,630 ft/3,240 m) and Mt. San Gorgonio (11,485 ft/3,501 m). .

The book includes access information and a description of each tour. Besides just saying where to ski, included are notes like the ``wunt, wunt'' noise you might hear at Grouse grouse, common name for a game bird of the colder parts of the Northern Hemisphere. There are about 18 species. Grouse are henlike terrestrial birds, protectively plumaged in shades of red, brown, and gray.  Mountain, from the male blue grouse. Area maps with trails and an index showing the type of tour and difficulty are helpful features.

The book starts out with a history of skiing in California, winter-driving trips for snow-challenged Southern Californians and important information about weather, gear, skiing basics and avalanche safety.

This book is in its second, revised printing. The author posts updates atwww.ski.drydog.com.

With the recent storms lowering snow levels, you can forget about the beach. Strap on some skis and tour the local mountains.

For those who don't like snow, there's even a description of sand skiing at Kelso Dunes in the Mojave National Preserve Mojave National Preserve: see Mojave Desert; National Parks and Monuments (table). .

Crest of the trail

A new Web site (http://cnst.oakapple.net) chronicles a journey up the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail: see National Parks and Monuments (table). , which stretches from Mexico through California, Oregon and Washington.

The site's creator began a project in 2001 that's expected to take 10-20 years. The hiker plans to cover 50 miles of trail per week between April and October after advancing 500 miles in the first year of the plan.

Hiking by the day rather than by overnight trips seems to be the way this odyssey will be completed:

``The day-hiking approach eliminates car shuttle problems and keeps the planning and hiking effort much less concentrated than required for the through-hikers who over the course of a month will require resupply re·sup·ply

two to four times, or section hikers who by effort might just finish one of the thirty sections with just one resupply or perhaps none.''

--Fishing heroes: With war increasingly inevitable with each passing day, no one in the country will be more important than the men and women of the armed forces. Those service men and women who also share a passion for fishing have their own site dedicated to the sport (www.militaryangler.com).

The site has a link to the United States Department of Defense Team Bass tournament, scheduled for March 30-April 4 at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia.
