 warden John Marquez, this book is a fast-paced thriller about bear poaching poaching: see cooking.  and murder. The complex plot ties together an undercover investigation into a ring that's selling bear parts for Asian folk medicine folk medicine, methods of curing by means of healing objects, herbs, or animal parts; ceremony; conjuring, magic, or witchcraft; and other means apart from the formalized practice of medical science. , a murdered hiker and a possibly turncoat warden.

Russell skillfully weaves his story with lots of action and crisp dialogue. The stakes go up when Marquez's family becomes a target.

Full of surprises and insight into some of California's lesser known bad guys and heroes, Night Games is a great read.

Squaw Valley Squaw Valley, valley, NE Calif., in the Sierra Nevada Mts., NW of Lake Tahoe. A well-known ski and winter recreational resort, it was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics.
