NATURAL RESOURCES BOOK REVIEW.A Field Guide to Fly Fishing By Dennis Bitton (The Lyons Press), $17.95 This book could be titled ``A Field Guide to the Fish that Fly Fishers Fish For,'' but that would be hard to fit on the cover. Bitton's book is based on the premise that the more predators know about their quarry, the more successful they will be. The result is guide to 51 fresh and saltwater fish from American Grayling grayling, common name for a brilliantly colored fish belonging to the genus Thymallus, of the family Salmonidae (salmon family), and closely allied to the smelt. Graylings are found chiefly in clear, cold, fresh waters of the Northern Hemisphere. to Weakfish weakfish: see croaker. weakfish or sea trout Any of several species (genus Cynoscion) in the drum family (Sciaenidae), carnivorous bottom-dwelling fishes along warm and tropical seashores. that predators with whippy Adj. 1. whippy - bending and snapping back readily without breaking flexible elastic - capable of resuming original shape after stretching or compression; springy; "an elastic band"; "a youthful and elastic walk" rods pursue. Beautifully illustrated with color photos by R. Valentine Atkinson and illustrations by Rod Walinchus, this is a useful addition to any fly angler's library. The author supplies concise information about the range, life history and biology of the selected game fish. To help you catch them, also included are fly pattern recommendations for each species from renowned fly fisherman Lefty Kreh. California anglers might take exception to the omission of the state freshwater fish, the golden trout, as a separate listing (it's lumped with rainbows). Anglers who fly-fish Christmas Island might wonder about the exclusion of the giant trevally, Baja aficionados might want to see a listing for ladyfish ladyfish: see bonefish. ladyfish or tenpounder Species (Elops saurus, family Elopidae) of primarily tropical coastal marine fish. and sierra mackerel mackerel, common name for members of the family Scombridae, 60 species of open-sea fishes, including the albacore, bonito, and tuna. Homepage features include ``The Best in Secluded Camping,'' ``2004 Outdoor Buyer's Guide,'' ``National Trails Day Special'' and ``America's Best Beaches.'' Gorp.away.com is also remarkable because it is detail-oriented. It is hard to imagine that a Web site could cover that much ground and still highlight every high and low, but it pulls it off with ease. Choosing activities in California is also easy with Gorp.away.com's sectional breakdown. Choose a region (coastal, midland etc.), in this case, coastal, with the activity of biking and wine tasting in Santa Barbara, zero in on a particular event and see exactly what you're in for. Prices are listed and the trip is covered in detail with booking options. - Nathan Brown CAPTION(S): photo, 2 boxes Photo: no caption (Book: ``A Field Guide to Fly Fishing'') Box: (1) TUNE IN (2) CHECK IT OUT |
