$4.95 No one does the outdoors better than the staffers at Outside magazine, and, as is to be expected, this glossy annual is much more than gloss.

--Prized fish: The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation will have its 31st annual Adult Fishing Derby on Nov. 8 at Apollo Park in Lancaster.

The derby, open to anglers 16 and older with a fishing license, will allow participants to compete during a four-hour period for prizes.

The event will benefit the Free Youth Fishing Derby on May 1.

--Lead pays: The Los Padres National Forest Los Padres National Forest is a forest located in southern and central California, which includes most of the mountainous land along the California coast from Ventura to Monterey, extending inland.
