style (he calls himself ``Coyote''), supplies the information you need to undertake safely an off-highway trip in that SUV you've only driven to the supermarket.

The author explains how four-wheel drive works, what you need to know before you go, what to take and how to avoid trouble. Of course, at some point you're going to get stuck or have a mechanical problem. ``Shifting into 4WD'' tells you how to get unstuck and how to get your vehicle working again.

Off-highway driving technique and etiquette is covered, including ecologically responsible driving tips. Braking, power management, steering and ground clearance all are well covered. Techniques for dealing with obstacles such as potholes, ditches, trees, rocks and sand are described.

Cartoon-style illustrations by Harry Martin are a hoot. They entertain while underscoring important points.

There are extensive checklists and gear lists so you'll be properly prepared for your adventure. This is definitely the book to read before you leave the pavement!
