Area'' By Marc J. Soares, The Mountaineers Books ($15.95) If you've been to San Francisco, you know hiking up and down hills is a way of life. But with this book you can choose your terrain, whether it be rolling hills, rocky overpasses or coastal ways. Such is the diversity of the Bay Area, and this book does a great job in highlighting these places, and how to hike them. These hikes can last one to six hours, taking one past creeks, into mountains and along the water. As a bonus, there's a full-color section showing the beauty of the landscape that can be hiked. Many hiking books use black and white, so it's a treat to see the brownish-grey outcroppings of rock south of Coyote Ridge, green meadow clearings near Carson Pass and waterfalls in the brown-black rock of the East Bay foothills. Of course, because this book covers 100 hikes in 240 pages, it's more an overview of the area and what to expect than detailed diagrams and trail maps. This would be a great book to keep in the car, so you'll have an idea of what to do when you reach the Bay City.
