NATIONSBANK TO SPONSOR 1993 COMMONWEALTH GAMES OF VIRGINIA

ROANOKE, Va., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank (NYSE: NB) announced today that it will be a presenting sponsor of the 1993 Commonwealth Games of Virginia and will be "The Official Bank of the Commonwealth Games."
In its fourth year, the Commonwealth Games of Virginia is an Olympic-style sports festival for Virginia's amateur athletes of all ages and skill levels. The games take place in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding area July 15-18.
Promoted and staged by Virginia Amateur Sports, Inc. (VAS), the Commonwealth Games are expected to attract approximately 7,000 athletes and another 8,000-9,000 spectators and volunteers.
"We are excited to join forces with VAS in presenting the Commonwealth Games," said Doug Waters, regional commercial executive for NationsBank. "As a corporate sponsor of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, this allows NationsBank to support a U.S. Olympic Games Participant event here in our state.
"It is rewarding to be part of an event that draws such a diverse audience and has such a large economic impact on the Roanoke Valley," said Waters, who has been involved on a volunteer basis with the three previous games.
"NationsBank joins Mobil Corporation as a presenting sponsor," said Peter Lampman, VAS executive director. "Because of our prior relationship with NationsBank, we knew they were a very community- oriented company. This partnership is a natural fit."
In addition to corporate sponsors, the games also receive support, both in dollars and in-kind services, from the Roanoke Valley local governments, added Lampman.
In past years, participants have included 6-year-old wrestlers, a woman in her 60s who tied the national high jump record in her age group, and an international runner who has participated in the Olympic trials.
For the first time, this year the games will include events for Special Olympians and wheelchair athletes.
Developed to promote amateur sports and an improved quality of life, the games attract athletes from a variety of backgrounds, ages and skill levels from all across the state. The Commonwealth Games are sanctioned by the National Congress of State Games (NCSG) and recognized by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), National Collegiate Athletic Association and Virginia High School League.
Similarly sanctioned games are held in 43 other states across the country.
In addition to the Commonwealth Games of Virginia, VAS also develops and promotes anti-drug programs for athletes of all ages throughout Virginia, strives to attract other major athletic events and assists in overall development and promotion of amateur sports activities within the state.
NationsBank is the fourth-largest bank holding company in the United States with $118 billion in assets and more than 1,700 full-service banking centers in nine states and the District of Columbia.
