NATIONSBANK DONATES $35,000 TO THE NORTH CAROLINA U.S. OLYMPIC COMMITTEE
CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank today presented a check for $35,000 to the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) in North Carolina as part of the company's sponsorship of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team.
The $35,000 is part of a financial commitment made by NationsBank to sponsor the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team in Barcelona.
NationsBank also will contribute funds to USOC committees in the District of Columbia and several other states where it operates banks. These states are Florida, Maryland, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
"As a first-time sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Team, NationsBank is extremely proud to be associated with the athletes on the team and the USOC," said Joel Smith, president of NationsBank/Carolinas. "There is no sporting event in the world that exemplifies excellence and hard work better than the Olympic Games, and those are the qualities we want associated with NationsBank. We hope our contribution will help the USOC continue to develop some of the finest athletes in the state and in the world."
The USOC, which is the coordinating body for all Olympic activities in the United States, expressed its appreciation for the contribution. "Only a select group of companies in the U.S. have the honor to be associated with the U.S. Olympic Team, and NationsBank is one of those companies," said Irwin Belk, North Carolina chairman for the USOC. "We are proud to have NationsBank play a major role in funding our training efforts."
The money contributed by NationsBank will be used for a variety of purposes, including direct grants to athletes preparing to compete in the 1996 Summer Olympic Games to be held in Atlanta. The grants help pay for the athletes' living expenses during their training for the Olympic Games.
In addition to its sponsorship of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team, NationsBank also has announced that it will be a corporate sponsor for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. The company has extended a $300 million line of credit to the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games to finance the construction of facilities needed to hold the 1996 Olympic Games.
NationsBank employees helped celebrate the announcement and kicked off the Summer Games with a Hot Dog Roast on the lawn at the Gateway Center on West Trade Street.
Olympians attending the celebration were: Bobby Jones, member of the 1972 Men's U.S. Olympic Basketball Team, former member of the Philadelphia 76ers and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill varsity basketball team; Floyd "Chunk" Simmons, member of the 1948 and 1952 Men's U.S. Olympic Track teams for which he won two bronze medals in the decathalon, and Harry Williamson, member of the 1936 Men's U.S. Olympic Track Team which included legendary track star Jesse Owens.
State regional and national champions from Weyandt's Gymnastics in Charlotte provided exhibition tumbling and acrobatics. NationsBank also will make a $200 donation to the U.S. Gymnastics Team in the name of Weyandt's Gymnastics.
NationsBank is the fourth largest bank holding company in the United States with $113 billion in assets and full-service banks in nine states and the District of Columbia.
