NATIONSBANK ANNOUNCES CONTRIBUTION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

RICHMOND, Va., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank (NYSE: NB) today announced it is making a $1 million contribution to the University of Virginia's upcoming capital campaign.
NationsBank of Virginia President Randolph McElroy said the donation will be paid over eight years, with the funds equally divided between the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration and the McIntire School of Commerce.
All funds will be added to the university's Eminent Scholar endowment, with specific uses designated within each school.
The Darden School funds will be credited to the Batten Family Leadership Challenge, which offered to match $3.5 million in other capital campaign gifts to the school. The $7 million total will provide two endowed chairs, a curriculum innovation fund and four research professorships. One of the chairs will be identified as the NationsBank Research Professorship.
In the McIntire School, $400,000 of its half-million dollar gift will be used to fund an endowed professorship, with the $100,000 balance to fund a "NationsBank Scholarship" for graduate or undergraduate business students. Income from this scholarship fund will be matched through the new Virginia Graduate and Undergraduate Assistance Program, which provides tuition support for students at state-supported colleges and universities.
"This contribution is a tangible indication of the high level of esteem with which the University of Virginia is viewed by NationsBank," said McElroy. "It is also an expression of appreciation for the contribution of its graduates to our company and the many communities we serve."
"For our capital campaign to be successful, we will need the support of individuals and corporations at unprecedented levels," said Robert D. Sweeney, University of Virginia's vice president for development. "This commitment from NationsBank is a fine example of leadership giving that we hope will be a model for other regional corporations."
"NationsBank is committed to the communities it serves, and locally we have always supported the university," said Harold Morris, senior banking executive for NationsBank in Charlottesville. "The success of the university is vital to the success of the Charlottesville community, and we are pleased that we are able to play a significant role in this major fundraising effort."
NationsBank is the fifth-largest banking company in the United States with more than $121 billion in assets and full-service banks in nine states and the

District of Columbia.
