NATIONSBANK, CHI CHI RODRIGUEZ, THE CITY OF CLEARWATER TO DEDICATE
RODRIGUEZ LEARNING CENTER FOR DISADVANTAGED YOUTHS SUNDAY, NOV. 15
CLEARWATER, Fla., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank will join Chi Chi Rodriguez, The City of Clearwater and local dignitaries to dedicate the third site of his learning center for troubled and disadvantaged youths Sunday at 6 p.m.
NationsBank has committed $2.5 million in financing to the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation Inc., for further development of the first privately supported public school and lodge at the Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club on McMullen-Booth Road in Clearwater.
The financing will allow The Foundation to build, on site, a 3,400- square-foot lodge and a 5,000-square-foot school where Rodriguez will use golf-related instruction as an innovative alternative for improving lives of underprivileged youths ages 6 through 15.
Clearwater Mayor Rita Garvey and representatives from Rodriguez' tournament sponsors Toyota and others also will participate in the dedication.
"NationsBank is proud to provide financing for the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation in Clearwater," said David Darnell, Commercial Bank executive for NationsBank Florida.
"We understand the vision Chi Chi and his co-founder, Bill Hayes, had when they imagined the center as a refuge for disadvantaged children," Darnell added. "We believe it is the responsibility of companies who can make a difference to do so.
"And we appreciate the opportunity to work with Chi Chi, Mr. Hayes and the City of Clearwater to make this happen." Along with Hayes and the late Bob James, Rodriguez recognized the responsibility to help imperiled youth.
That recognition led to the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation, Inc. Students are tutored in core academic classes and attend classes in retail sales, landscaping, maintenance, horticulture and golf.
As many as 450 students are taught annually in Rodriguez' schools. They are referred primarily through the Pinellas County School System.
Also attending the dedication ceremony is: Jay Gabler, president, Dagasa Construction.
The 1992 Chi Chi and the Zinger Toyota Kids Klassic golf tournament will be held Monday at the Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club and the Countryside Country Club Monday, Nov. 16. The event is co-sonsored by Battle Creek/Kool Golf Charities.
