NATIONAL TREE TRUST CONTINUES TO HELP SOUTH FLORIDA REPLANT -- THIS TIME WITH SUNBANK AT THE MIAMI METROZOO

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearly 200 volunteers will come together on the new site of the SunBank TreeBank at the Miami Metrozoo this Saturday, Dec. 4, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to begin potting 20,000 tree seedlings in an effort to continue to help reforest hurricane-damaged areas of South Dade, the National Tree Trust announced.
The National Tree Trust is the facilitator of the SunBank TreeBank project through its National Tree Bank partnership, in addition to providing 20,000 2-gallon containers and $3,500 for potting soil. This project is an extension of the National Tree Trust's potting of 50,000 seedlings at the Homestead base nursery site last year. The SunBank provided $5,000 to underwrite the irrigation system.
The 15,000 oak and mahogany seedlings are being donated by the Florida Division of Forestry and the 5,000 palm seedlings are a donation from A Hidden Garden -- a local nursery. Once the seedlings are placed on the SunBank TreeBank site near the Metrozoo's Paws exhibit, volunteers and zoo staff will tend to the potted trees for approximately a year until they are ready to be planted in the ground. At that time, they will be given to South Dade residents who lost trees during Hurricane Andrew and distributed to other barren locations throughout the area.
"The National Tree Trust is delighted to continue our support of reforesting the community forest through this unique corporate and private partnership," said Cindy Zimar, forester and assistant executive director of the National Tree Trust.
The mission of the non-profit National Tree Trust is to act as a catalyst for local volunteer groups in the growing, planting and maintenance of trees in rural communities, urban areas and along the nation's highways. The trust is committed to educational and public awareness tree planting programs that encourage citizen stewardship and safeguard the global environment.
