NATIONAL PARENT QUIZ ANSWERS TOUGH QUESTIONS

NATIONAL PARENT QUIZ ANSWERS TOUGH QUESTIONS
OLYMPIA, Wash., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released

today by Washington State Department of Social Health and Services:
Should children ever see their parents disagree? How much do parents' actions influence their children? Should children's needs always come first?
These and other though parenting issues will be discussed by parents, young people, professionals and celebrities on The National Parent Quiz airing Saturday, Dec. 28 at 10 a.m. on Seattle's KCTS-TV, Channel 9.
The program is designed to both entertain and educate viewers, exploring how effective parenting can help children avoid the dangers of alcohol and other drugs. While many factors contribute to substance abuse, research shows that positive family relationships can prevent such abuse.
Recognizing the link between parenting and substance abuse prevention, the state Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse funds help for parents throughout the state. Training courses offer parents skills in reducing their family's risks for abuse through improved communications, self-esteem, discipline and family management.
 J. David Hawkins, Ph.D., a University of Washington (UW) professor of social work and author of "Preparing for the Drug-Free Years: A Family Activity Book" was one of six national advisors to The National Parent Quiz. Along with other U.W. researchers, he has identified factors that increase or decrease a young person's chances of becoming involved with alcohol or other drugs.
"Such factors as close family bonding and a family policy on alcohol and drugs can help protect children from the pressures to use," Hawkins said. "Parents play a key role."
