NATIONAL MERCANTILE BANCORP ANNOUNCES DONALD D. THORNBURG
AS ITS NEW PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Culminating an extensive, nationwide search, National Mercantile Bancorp (NASDAQ: MBLA) today announced Donald D. Thornburg as its new president and chief executive officer. Thornburg, 54, has also been named president and chief executive officer of the company's subsidiary, Mercantile National Bank and will serve on the board of directors of both organizations. The appointments are subject to regulatory approval.
"Don Thornburg has earned wide respect in the banking industry for his management talents, including strategic planning, business development and cost containment skills that have led his organizations to growth and profitability," said Howard P. Ladd, chairman of the board of National Mercantile Bancorp. "He brings with him experience in successfully addressing just the types of issues we now face, and we are pleased he is now putting those abilities to work for our shareholders and customers."
Thornburg joins National Mercantile from Old Kent - Illinois Inc., a $1.2 billion bank holding company, which he served as president, chief executive officer and director since 1988. Prior to its 1988 acquisition by Old Kent Financial Corp. (NASDAQ: OKEN), Thornburg was chief executive officer and held other senior positions with Unibancorp, Inc., a $650 million bank holding company, and with Sears Bank & Trust Company, its principal subsidiary. He began his nearly 30-year career in banking with United California Bank (now First Interstate Bank of California). He served 19 years with that organization, culminating as senior vice president in charge of its U.S. banking division from 1979 to 1981.
Thornburg holds a Master's of Business Administration in finance from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Stanford University.
He fills vacancies created by William T. Hughes' resignation in September.
National Mercantile Bancorp is the holding company for Mercantile National Bank, member FDIC, a $350 million independent commercial bank with offices in Century City and Irvine, Calif. The bank offers a wide range of financial services to middle market companies, the entertainment industry, the real estate community, professionals, high net worth individuals, and the escrow and title insurance industries.
